My buddy and I heard that it was going to snow on Friday night so we decided that we would take another cast at it. Three days ago we got a plethora of rain which should have brought in a new batch of steelies followed by a couple of days of no precipitation, which should have made conditions perfect. The temperature held around 0 to +1 all day. We had some moment of large snowflakes which always makes the day captivating. Of course we stared at our favourite hole. This time it was more relaxing as compared to the Boxing Day Derby. Not a person there in the morning! There was to be a 2^nd annual Reaction Fly and Tackle fishing Derby so most guys were headed out tomorrow. If I would have known I would have liked to been part of that.I started the day throwing my horrible homemade row. It’s very loose and only lasts for about two or three casts. We did do something a little different for me. We walked down around the corner to adventure to see what’s there. They’re many bolder runs and some Ok water but once around the corner it’s hard to walk. On our way home we stopped by Fred to get some single eggs. Time to make Row Bags as it’s the only thing I feel comfortable with I have also bought some gigs as I would like to see how those go.  Until next report, keep tring

The Start of 2008 Vedder River fishing

The Boxing Day derby was my second time out this year for Steely hunting. So far it has been a memorable year as I finally got my dream day of fishing in a heavy snow fall. On Boxing Day we also received a little snow which was allot of fun for me and my buddies who accompanied me. Of course we started at my favourite hole (As you read more during my future post the first person to submit the answer to my favourite hole will win a Diawa Heartland fishing rod) but was very quite all day. I do want to say congratulations to my Buddy Wade Gienow who took home first prize with a beautiful 14.1lb buck.

Gienow beat out 245 other anglers for the title, including half a dozen of his closest fishing buddies.“The fish felt awesome,” said Gienow who weighed in his catch 20 minutes before the competition closed.The derby opened as soon as daylight hit the area and closed at 2 p.m. Gienow had his fish on the scale at 1:40 p.m. and recorded a weight of 14 pounds and eight ounces. Along with the coveted title, Gienow also won a guided fishing trip off Vancouver Island. He kept the title, but decided to send his parents on the fishing trip.“They love ocean fishing,” said Gienow, who credits his parents for teaching him everything he knows about the sport. “They taught me how it’s done.”Gienow says his parents took him ocean fishing even before he was born. And by the time he reached the tender age of one, he had his own fishing rod in his little hands.Gienow focussed on ocean fishing for the first 18 years of his life, and now at age 31, he enjoys river fishing.“I’ve been river fishing since I was 10,” he noted. “I stick to the rivers. I love it because I can put my feet on the ground.”Gienow, who works a a fishing guide, fished competitively when he was younger, but now he just goes out on the river whenever he’s not working. It’s a social event for Gienow and his friends, and it can be done all year round. They like to share stories and fishing tactics. “Just keep your fly in the water,” the derby champ advised.
